Introduction to Spinning with a Hand Spindle

with Katherine Johnson

Learn to use a hand spindle, one of the most foundational tools for one of humanity’s oldest technologies (textiles!) In this workshop, suitable for beginners, you will learn to make wool yarn with a top-whorl suspended spindle. We will practice drafting and spinning a singles yarn, plying, and discuss materials and preparation, various spindle types, finishing, and basic ergonomics.

Katherine has been spinning for over 20 years, starting with meeting a spindle maker at a fiber festival in the mountains of Utah, who unexpectedly placed a spindle and some wool directly in her hands. She still spins yarn on that spindle (having broken and repaired it several times now), but has also branched out to many other types. She uses both hand spindles and wheels, but has a marked preference for the portability of spindles, often repeating the saying that yarn production on a spindle is slower by the inch but faster by the yard. She also loves and practices other types of highly portable textile crafts and has taught classes at shops and festivals around the northeast over the past ten years.
